What Book of Dead actually is
Rich Wilde walks into an Egyptian tomb on a five-reel, three-row grid with ten paylines, and the whole game turns on one free-spins round. Land three books and a single symbol is picked at random to expand across the reels for the duration — pay it on any position rather than on a payline, and one middling spin becomes the session's whole return.
That single mechanic is why the game is still on every operator's front page a decade after release, and it is also why the ordinary spin is so thin. The figure worth carrying to the cashier is not the headline 96.21% but the fact that Play'n GO ships this game in five configurations — 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% — and the operator picks one. The bottom setting keeps nearly four times as much of your stake as the top one on the same spins, the game looks identical either way, and nothing on the reels tells you which you are playing. Check the paytable at the casino before you deposit rather than trusting any RTP printed on a review, ours included. High volatility on top of that means long stretches with nothing, and the expanding symbol is the reason to accept it — or the reason not to.

What this spec means for a session
The 5,000× ceiling is the largest return a single stake is designed to be able to produce: on a £1 spin that is £5,000 (what a ceiling costs).
The grid is 5 × 3 across 10 paylines — more lines is not better odds (paylines).
The mechanics this title actually ships, and what each one does to the spread of results:
- Free spins a run of spins at no further stake, usually under modified maths, where most of the return sits.
- Gamble a double-or-nothing on a win; it changes variance and nothing else.
