We publish a game's certified RTP where we have it, its volatility, its maximum win, its provider, and. This is the part almost nobody publishes — which RTP version an operator has actually configured, wherever we can establish it.

We are an affiliate site and we are honest about it: we earn commission when you click through to an operator. That has no influence on what appears here, and none of it feeds any score. What follows is the mechanical truth about how these products work, including the parts that make them worse.

RTP, honestly

RTP — return to player — is the proportion of all money staked on a game that the game is designed to return, across its entire theoretical lifetime.

Read that definition again, because every word in it is load-bearing, and the marketing depends on you skimming it.

A 96% RTP slot is designed to return $96 for every $100 staked across millions upon millions of spins, pooled across every player who ever plays it. It is a design constant, verified by a testing house over an enormous simulation. It is emphatically not a promise about your session, your deposit, or your year.

Over a hundred spins, essentially anything can happen. Over ten thousand, you will still be a long way from the theoretical figure. The number only asserts itself over a horizon no individual player will ever reach. The casino reaches it, because the casino plays every session of every player simultaneously, and for the casino the long run arrives every day.

And the 4% is not a rounding error. It is the business. The salaries, the servers, the licences, the marketing budget, the bonus you were offered, and the profit. Every unit of turnover you generate feeds it. That is why we will never tell you that any game, at any RTP, is a way to make money.

Note what happens at the bottom of that table. A 88% game does not cost you slightly more than a 96% game. It costs you three times as much per unit of turnover. And as the next section explains, that 88% version is very often the same game, with the same artwork and the same name, as the 96% one.

The most under-reported fact in the industry: the RTP an operator chose

Most players believe a slot has an RTP — a single number, fixed by the studio, the same everywhere.

That is not how it works, and it has not been for years.

Many slots ship to operators with multiple selectable RTP configurations. The same game, the same artwork, the same name, the same maths in every respect except the one that matters, offered to the operator at a range of settings. A typical spread looks like this:

The operator selects the configuration. You are generally not told which one you are playing — not on the lobby tile, not in the marketing, often nowhere in the interface at all. Two operators can offer what is visibly the same slot, and one will take three times more per spin than the other.

This is legal in most markets, and it is disclosed only in the sense that the number sits in the game's paytable if you go looking. It is not disclosed in any sense a normal person would recognise as disclosure.

We record the configured RTP on a game's profile wherever we can establish it, and an operator found running reduced configurations carries that as a documented finding. Operators that publish their configured RTPs openly are noted for it, because that behaviour is rare.

Volatility, and what it does to your money

Volatility — sometimes called variance — describes the shape of a game's returns, not their size.

  • Low volatility. Frequent small wins. The balance moves in small increments and drifts slowly downwards. Sessions last a long time. Large wins do not occur, because the maths does not contain them.
  • Medium volatility. The middle ground, and the marketing default.
  • High volatility. Long stretches of nothing, punctuated rarely by large wins. Most sessions end with the balance gone. A small number end with a substantial win. The average of all sessions is still the RTP.

The critical point is that volatility does not change the expected cost of play. It changes the distribution of outcomes around it. A high-volatility game does not pay more. It pays less often and more heavily, and it will consume a bankroll far faster on the way, because the dry spells between features are long and every spin during them still carries the full house edge.

The practical consequence is bluntly asymmetric: high volatility raises the chance of an unusually large win and raises the chance of losing your entire deposit quickly. Both. Simultaneously. It widens the distribution in both directions, and only one of those directions is in the advertising.

Why RTP and volatility mean nothing apart

Same number. Same expected cost. Nothing else in common. RTP tells you the price. Volatility tells you the experience. A review that quotes one and omits the other has told you approximately half of nothing, which is why we publish both on every game profile and will not list a game where we can establish neither.

Max win multipliers, and how rare they truly are

A slot advertising a 25,000x maximum win is telling you something true and, on its own, almost useless.

The max win is the largest outcome the maths permits. It says nothing about the probability of that outcome, which is not usually published, and which is — for the headline multipliers used in marketing — extraordinarily small. For a top-tier max win on a high-volatility slot, the frequency is routinely somewhere in the range of one in tens of millions of spins, and sometimes considerably rarer than that.

To put that in a human scale: at three seconds a spin, playing continuously without pause, one in fifty million spins is a run of roughly four and a half years of uninterrupted play. It is not a target. It is a number in a brochure.

A max win figure is a statement about the tail of a distribution. Treat it as a description of the game's design — high-volatility games have high max wins by construction, because that is what high volatility is, and never, under any circumstances, as an expectation.

RNG certification: what a testing house does and does not check

Games in regulated markets are tested by independent laboratories before they may be offered.

What certification actually establishes:

  • The random number generator passes statistical tests for unpredictability and uniform distribution: the outcomes cannot be forecast and are not biased in any detectable pattern.
  • The game's actual return, over an enormous simulated sample, matches the RTP the studio declared for the configuration submitted.
  • The game behaves as its own rules and paytable describe.
  • The result of a spin is determined at the moment the spin is committed, and is not influenced by your balance, your session history, whether you are playing with a bonus, or how much you have lost.

What certification does not establish, and was never designed to:

  • That the game is generous. An 88% RTP slot can be perfectly certified. The certificate confirms it returns 88%, honestly, exactly as declared. It is a truth-in-labelling check, not a fairness floor.
  • Which configuration an operator deployed. The lab certifies the versions submitted. It does not police which one a given casino switched on last Tuesday.
  • That the operator is solvent, or will pay you. The RNG being fair has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a withdrawal request is honoured. Those failures happen at the cashier, not in the game. That is what the Tribunal is for.

Certification is genuinely valuable and its absence is disqualifying. Just be precise about the question it answers: is the result honest? — not is this a good deal?

Providers, and demo play

The studio that built a game is a meaningful signal, because studios have reputations to lose and their behaviour is observable over years. We track whether a provider publishes its RTP configurations openly or ships silent variants, whether its certified RTPs appear on the game's own information screen where a player can find them, and whether it licenses to operators on our blacklist.

We embed demos only where the provider authorises it. No scraped clients, no unauthorised mirrors. If there is no demo on a game's page, we could not embed one legitimately, and we would rather show nothing than run something we have no right to run.

Demos are useful for exactly one thing: learning what a game feels like without paying to find out — mechanics, pace, whether you enjoy it. They are useless for anything else. A demo run that goes hot tells you nothing; one that goes cold tells you nothing. You are sampling a handful of spins from a distribution that resolves over millions, and people are incorrigibly bad at not reading a pattern into that. A demo cannot tell you a game is "paying". Nothing can, because a game does not have moods.

No strategy changes a slot's RTP

There is no way to play a slot better.

Bet sizing does not change it. Bet timing does not change it. Switching games after a losing run does not change it, because the next game has never heard of the last one. Stopping the reels manually does not change it: the outcome was determined the instant you committed the spin, and the animation is theatre performed after the fact. A game that "hasn't paid in a while" is not due. Each spin is independent, which is precisely what certification tests for.

Every system sold to you on the contrary — every progression, every "hot slot" tracker, every stake ladder — either misunderstands the maths or knowingly sells you a misunderstanding of it. Some are sold by affiliates. We are an affiliate, and we are telling you they are worthless.

Only three decisions measurably affect what a slot costs you:

That is the complete list. Skill games — blackjack, video poker — are genuinely different, and their house edge does respond to correct play. A slot has no such surface. There is nothing there to outplay.

And which operators in your register offer it, jurisdiction-filtered as everything here is. Where a figure is not verifiable, we say so rather than guessing — an unknown RTP is published as unknown.
