Demo mode, sometimes called free play or fun mode, runs the game with pretend credit. It has one good use and several bad ones.
The good use
Demo mode is the cheapest way to read a game before it costs you anything:
- 01Open the information panel and read the RTP as configured on this operator's site. This is the single most useful thing you can do, and it is free.
- 02Find the maximum win multiplier.
- 03Get a feel for the volatility and the hit frequency — how long the dry runs are, how the bonus round behaves.
- 04Learn the mechanics without paying tuition.
Do all of that. Then close it.
Why it is not a preview
A demo session is not evidence of anything. A run of good luck in demo tells you nothing about the next hour of real play, because the RNG has no memory and no knowledge of your session. The impression of a "hot" game is manufactured by exactly the design features described under hit frequency, and it is at its most persuasive when nothing is at stake.
There is also the obvious asymmetry: a large win in demo mode costs the operator nothing and buys it your attention. A large loss in demo mode costs you nothing and buys it nothing.
The regulatory view
Regulators do not treat free play as harmless. In Great Britain, an operator must verify a customer's age before allowing access to demo games at all: the regulator's position is that free play is a gateway into gambling, not an exemption from it.
