Responsible gambling

The tools and duties that keep gambling inside limits chosen in advance — deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion.

The phrase is contested, and it is worth saying why. "Responsible gambling" places the responsibility on the player for a product engineered to be difficult to stop using. The better frame is safer gambling, and an operator's duty of care. The tools below are useful. The framing should not let anyone off the hook.

The tools, and how to actually use them

Every licensed operator must offer these. Most bury them three clicks deep in account settings.

ToolWhat it doesUse it like this
Deposit limitCaps what you can pay in per day, week or monthSet it before your first deposit. Set it lower than feels necessary.
Loss limitCaps net losses over a periodBetter than a deposit limit, because it counts what actually happens
Time limit / reality checkInterrupts a session at intervalsSet it to 15 minutes. If the interruption annoys you, that is information.
Time-outLocks the account for 24 hours to 6 weeksThe right response to a bad evening
Self-exclusionCloses the account for 6 months to permanentlyThe right response to a bad year

A limit increase should never take effect immediately. Under most regimes an increase must wait — 24 hours or more — while a decrease takes effect at once. If an operator raises your limit the moment you ask, in the moment you are asking, that is a finding and we score it.

The rules that hold

  1. 01Only money you have already decided you can lose.
  2. 02Never chase a loss. The next bet does not know about the last one — see RNG.
  3. 03Never borrow to gamble. Not from a card, not from a person.
  4. 04The house edge means the expected outcome of sustained play is a loss. Any spend is the price of entertainment, and never an investment.
  5. 05Set the limits when you are calm. They exist to bind the version of you who is not.
