How it works
You win $3,000 and request a withdrawal. The money enters a pending period of 48 hours. During those 48 hours, your account offers a button — "cancel withdrawal", "return to balance", "reverse" — that puts the $3,000 back into play with a single click.
It is available at two in the morning. It is available while the withdrawal you are waiting for is the reason you have opened the app. And a meaningful share of money that is requested is never actually paid out, because it is clicked back.
Why it exists
There is no operational reason for it. A payment that has not left the operator's account does not need a customer-facing cancellation feature; support could reverse it on request in the rare case where someone genuinely needs to. The button exists because withdrawn money is gone and balance money is not.
It is most damaging to exactly the people it is least defensible to target. Reversing a withdrawal to chase a loss is a recognised marker of gambling harm — see problem gambling.
The regulatory position
The UK Gambling Commission restricted reverse withdrawals temporarily in May 2020, as part of the package of online-safety measures introduced that year, and made the ban permanent from 31 October 2021 — the deadline by which every operator licensed in Great Britain had to have removed the feature. Both dates matter: the first was an emergency measure, the second is the rule that stands. Where the feature still exists, it exists because the operator's regulator permits it.
What to do
- Withdraw, then close the tab. Log out. Delete the app from your phone for two days.
- If the operator offers a setting to disable reversal, turn it on now, not later.
